In the Croix-des-Bouquets Arrondissement near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the fusion of metal, fire, and skilled craftsmanship brings to life figures from land and sea. These cut-and-embossed artworks, crafted from recycled steel drums, reflect Haitian nature and cultural heritage. Many designs draw inspiration from Vodou traditions, a unique blend of West and Central African spiritual beliefs with Roman Catholic elements. This metal art form holds significant cultural value in Haiti and is internationally acclaimed.
Joseph Serge Jolimeau is regarded as a pioneer of Haitian metalwork. Serge’s distinctive style features flowing curves and dynamic textures, highlighted by gold and copper paint. He actively promotes and mentors emerging artists in his Noailles village gallery, ensuring this exceptional Haitian craft endures.
