Handwoven by women along the Okavango River in northeastern Namibia, these baskets honor generations of artistry rooted in ancestral practices. Working seasonally after harvest, the artists gather palm fibers, extract natural dyes, and weave each piece by hand, shaping sculptural forms. These baskets were inspired by traditional beer strainers, which filtered out impurities in the production. Reimagined for decoration.
This Beer Basket is handcrafted from the Makalani Palm, creating a unique and durable design. The palm is rolled and twisted, making for a sturdy structure. The natural dyes from roots and leaves add to the eco-friendly nature of this artisanal basket.
Omba Arts has partnered with over 400 artists across 11 ethnic groups, helping bring global recognition to once-overlooked traditions. A portion of proceeds supports a community-run garden for sustainable palm and dye production.
To reshape, soak in water and form as desired.
Natural dyes are prone to fading, keep away from direct sunlight.
