Scent

Traditional Japanese incense dates back to early days of Buddhism in Japan. First introduced through China, it was used by samurai to practice mindfulness before heading into battle.

Kousaido are an incense manufacturer based in Kyoto, capturing the city's essence through its blends of traditional and modern aromas in their incense. Sandalwood is the most common base of Kousaido incense, blending together a variety of other woods, flowers, spices, and herbs to create unique scents. Incense can be used to the set the tone of the day, grounding us in meditation through our olfactory senses.

This incense series is based on picture scrolls with ink paintings on paper, sumo wrestling, bows and arrows, and oi-kakeko designs in choju-giga. Chōjyu Giga Oikakkeko is a playful depiction of a monkey and a rabbit playing a game of chase.
