From our friends at Hilos y Colores, a social enterprise in Ayacucho, Peru since 1995. The goal of Hilos y Colores is to preserve ancestral textile techniques and support artisan communities. With its network of 800 artisans in 30 communities, Hilos y Colored produces custom designed woven, knit, embroidered, and crocheted home and fashion accessories for ethical brands around the world. Hilos Y Colores instructs women to embroider as a supplemental income in their homes. Founder of the program, Mercedes, explained to me that the women were so successful that in some instances, they out-earned their husbands!
