Beadwork has become a major part of Guatemalan textile culture. Hand-beaded ornaments fill markets across the country, especially those catering to tourists, but it can be challenging to know which pieces are fairly made and locally produced. That’s why makers like Cholita matter. On our recent trip, we met her and her husband, Domingo, the duo behind Creaciones Cholita. Together, they create exquisite hand-beaded jewelry and the classic bird ornaments our Peregrin customers have come to treasure.
Cholita’s story reflects the resilience behind so many women-run businesses in Guatemala. During the Civil War of the 1980s, her father was tragically killed. Left to support the family on her own, her mother turned to craftwork to generate an income. From those beginnings, Creaciones Cholita grew into a workshop that not only sustained their household but also provided work for other women in the community.
