Description

The Siddi people of India are descendants of enslaved Africans who were brought to South Asia by colonists in the 16th century. The Siddi community formed as enslaved Africans escaped their enslavers and convened over time in remote, inaccesible areas of India and Pakistan. Kawandi quilts are unique to the Siddi community.

To make Kawandi, Siddi women use scraps from saris and other fabric remnants. Each of the four corners of the quilt holds a phula, or flower, a fabric tassel that finishes the piece. Each kawandi is expressive and individually unique. It is a rugged piece meant to be used and loved, but still beautiful and vibrant.
